WELLNESS AND PREVENTIVE MEDICINE

A year is a long time for a pet.  Things that change slowly, such as weight or dental disease, may pass unnoticed at home, but are quickly noticed when looking at the lifetime medical record.  That’s why it is essential that we give your pet a full clinical examination every year, and hopefully we can catch the early signs of any health issues before they become serious problems.

We recommend annual wellness exams for adult dogs and cats between one and seven years old. Puppies, kittens, and senior pets should have more frequent examinations. At each check-up, we record your pet's weight and temperature, ask about eating habits and exercise, and discuss parasite control. Our veterinarians also check for specific health issues, such as dental disease, heart issues, or signs of cancer. You also have the chance to discuss any behavioral concerns and ways to manage them.

As pets get older, we like to start seeing pets twice a year to monitor for changes in their health. Like people, older pets have an increased risk of kidney disease, heart disease, cancer, diabetes, liver disease, senility, and general weakness. Mobility challenges, dental disease and behavior changes are also more common with older pets.  Staying on top of these issues helps improve the quality of life for your pet in their senior years.

We all want our pets to live a long, happy and healthy life. We will consider every aspect of their health to make sure they are with us for years to come.

VACCINES AND PARASITE CONTROL

At your wellness exam, we will also review the vaccines they might need. We tailor the vaccination schedule according to your pet’s age and general health. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) recommends that all dogs receive canine distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, parainfluenza, and rabies vaccinations. Other vaccines which may be appropriate include Lyme disease, Bordetella, leptospirosis and influenza. Core vaccines for cats include feline distemper, feline calicivirus, feline herpes, and rabies.

Parasites are a common problem that can affect your pet year-round, but are especially important in spring and summer months.  Fleas, ticks and mosquitos are ready to infect animals who don’t have adequate protection.  Other parasites can also include heartworm, roundworm, and hookworm. Some parasites can spread to other animals, humans, and take up residence in your home.  We are happy to find the right treatment for your pet to protect it from parasites.

It is vital that our patients get off on the right foot…that is, the right paw!  Puppies and kittens should receive their first set of vaccines by eight weeks of age, and appropriate parasite control can be started to keep any little passengers from becoming big problems.

SPAY AND NEUTERS

Spaying your female pet and neutering your male pet helps to control pet overpopulation. Unfortunately, millions of pets are euthanized every year because there are not enough homes for all of them.

Additional benefits of sterilization include a longer lifespan, reduced risk of mammary gland and testicular cancer, no heat cycles or roaming behavior, and less aggressive behavior by both males and females.

We will talk to you about the right time to spay or neuter your pet, and answer any questions you may have about the procedure.   On the big day, we will update you on your pet’s surgery and progress.  Finally, we will follow up with a phone call to ensure that the recovery was uneventful.

DENTISTRY

Your pet's oral health is a good indicator of his or her overall well-being. We check the teeth and gums at every wellness exam to look for signs of infection or other dental problems. Additionally, you can schedule an appointment for a dental cleaning, dental x-rays and corrective dentistry under general anesthesia. Our staff works with clients to teach them proper toothbrushing techniques for an at-home routine to reduce the frequency and severity of dental cleaning.

Surgery & Medicine

If your pet becomes unwell, we are able to investigate and treat most medical and surgical conditions at our facility, including skin, allergies, ear, eye and gastrointestinal problems. We use our in-house blood analysers, microscopes and x-rays to reach the correct diagnosis.  Our team will work with you to determine a treatment plan that is best for you and your pet.

If your pet needs a procedure, we will take care to make sure they are comfortable and relaxed in our hospital facilities.

Our hospital is pet friendly. It is very important to us that your pet is not stressed and very comfortable during their stay, so feel free to bring in any toys or special blankets your pet has to comfort them should they need to stay with us.

We don’t want you to worry, so we will keep you up-to-date on your pet’s progress and recovery.   If your pet needs through-the-night care we can easily arrange referral to the local emergency center for overnight care.
